Soubor irských tanců YMCA Brno

irský drak

Dear visitor,

We would like to introduce DÉMÁIRT, our Irish Dancing group which was founded in November 1999, driven by the yearning and effort to learn the difficult but beautiful dancing techniques from Erin.

Currently we have around 20 members and as we already mentioned, our priority is the "coordination of spontaneous reactions to Irish music". However, our group consists of lovers of the Green Isle who like to participate in any events connected with Celtic culture - such as the national Beltine festival, held each time at a different place of our own beautiful country, or Celtic music concerts or festivals in Brno or elsewhere.

Our repertoire consists of ceilí dances and own choreographies in both soft shoes and hard shoes. We rehearse regularly on Tuesdays (that is also the origin of our name - Démáirt means Tuesday in Irish), Thursdays and Sundays. We have beginners courses on Tuesdays from 5 pm and special lessons for children on Thursdays from 5 till 6 pm. Apart from our own classes we also regularly participate in seminars by foreign Irish dancing teachers (TCRG), certified by An Comisiún le Rincí Gaelacha, the largest world organisation covering Irish dancing. These included especially former Riverdance dancers Anne-Marie Cunningham TCRG and Shane McAvinchey, also Kelley O'Boyle TCRG and most recently Lord of the Dance lead dancer Stephen Scariff TCRG. Currently we are working with another LOTD star, Ronan Morgan TCRG who is based in Hungary and also teaches in Austria and the Netherlands.

Thanks to Stephen our dancers were able to participate in an official European feis (competition) for the first time which took place in Vienna in November 2006. Their effort did not remain fruitless and they received several prizes. We are very proud of their achievemets and we shall keep our fingers crossed for them also in the upcoming feiseanna in 2007.

DÉMÁIRT can contribute to any party, ball, celebration, concert or any event where Irish dancing and music are desired, by showing or teaching the dances. What can we offer?

In case you're wondering about our name - DÉMÁIRT, it is quite simple. As it usually happens, after long considerations we finally ended up with a name which was mentioned only as a joke on the day of our regular training but in the end it seemed quite fitting... so, Démáirt means TUESDAY in Irish. Similar coincidence four years later brought about the Celtic pattern on our new dresses: only after the final selection we realized it is a dragon - among other things also the symbol of our city :-)

From time to time we also organise or take part in a ceilí / ceilidh where our sweat washes away the dust of every day and the rhythm of reels, jigs and other attempts carries us to the land of myths and dreams… until we are reliably brought back by a good pint, pleasantly concluding the evening. (To our great sorrow, there is not one real Irish pub in Brno! :-( Once there is one, be sure you'll meet us there, dancing away…)
