Feiseanna - official Irish dancing competitions
A Feis [fesh] is a European competition in Irish dancing and also one of the culminations of dancers' efforts. However, it is not easy to get to one. In order to participate in such competition, you have to have not only great talent and endurance, enough money for entrance fees, competition costumes and travelling, but also, foremostly, a certified Irish dancing teacher (TCRG) who will accept you under his wings and provide you with steps of individual competition dances and an official pupil status in his school. That enables you not only the possibility to visit many interesting European cities but mainly to present your abilities at the feis. On the other hand, it strongly limits dancers from participating in other seminars or from improving their dancing abilities with other teachers, as this is forbidden.
Our group has been participating in these competitions since 2006 under the supervision of Stephen Scariff, TCRG, who was replaced in 2007 by Ronan Morgan TCRG.
What dances are actually subject of the competition? Irish dances are divided into soft shoe and hard shoe dances. So, soft shoe dances are the following: reel, light jig, single jig and slip jig. Hard shoes are used for heavy jig and hornpipe. Dancers are divided into many categories according to age and into several more according to level: Basic, Primary, Intermediate and Open... and then there are only Michael Flatley, Colin Dunne and TCRGs :) Therefore, dancers have many possibilities to compete and try their luck in many occasions.
